EU gas-fired power expansion faces delay amid soaring data center demand for turbines

LONDON (ICIS)–EU plans to expand gas-fired generation face long delays amid rising global turbine demand, particularly in the US, Hernan Arrigone, principal, energy infrastructure at global investment firm Actis told ICIS.

European countries plan to add some 80GW of new gas-fired power by 2030, with 12GW alone receiving EU approval for Germany earlier in January.

However, Arrigone said delivery periods for turbines now reach three to four years from firm orders.

Meanwhile, costs for full-scope combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) have tripled since 2020 and could be as high as $2,400/kW.
