Northwest Europe ammonia-to-hydrogen production costs break back above €6/kg

LONDON (ICIS)–The ICIS Northwest Europe ammonia-to-hydrogen assessment posted a solid increase on a weekly basis in mid-October with wider gains in the energy complex supporting the assessment with ammonia supply still seen as tight.

The ammonia-to-hydrogen assessment posted a weekly increase of €0.76/kg to stand at €6.41/kg on 12 October, the highest value since early March and over €2.50/kg higher than the lows seen back in mid-July, ICIS data showed.

The ammonia-to-hydrogen assessment reflects the cost of importing fossil-based ammonia to northwest Europe and then decomposing that ammonia into hydrogen. The ammonia price referenced is the ICIS CFR Northwest Europe Duty Unpaid assessment, published every working Thursday.

Low carbon hydrogen produced via steam methane reforming using month-ahead Dutch gas (SMR) with carbon capture and storage (CCS)  also posted a strong weekly rise as the ICIS TTF turned bullish, up by almost €1/kg to come in at €4.28/kg, the highest for eight months.
